Abstract

Industrial attachment or On-Job Training is an important component in the training of students. Institutions tend to introduce this component irrespective of the discipline of studies with the intention of ensuring their students are fully prepared for job. Industrial attachment does not only exposes students to real situation but also help develop key competencies in students. As such most technical programmes have a compulsory industrial attachment component. The outcome of industrial attachment depends on how students are prepared for it, on the participation of the employers and on the system administered by the institutions. The emphasis on these three factors varies from one institution to another. This project will study the practices adopted by technical institutions of higher education in Malaysia pertaining to these factors. It intends to identify practices that lead to the most effective development of student's competencies while at the same time benefits the organizations that host the students.This research approaches taken are broken into three phases. Phase I includes understanding the nature of industrial training programmes conducted by Malaysian higher education institutions. Phase 2 is to understand the perception of various parties on current approaches for industrial training and gauging their expectations. Phase 3 involves proposing a framework for industrial training and obtaining feedbacks on it from students, institutions and organizations through questionnaires and interviews for the purpose identifying initiatives to further enhance the effectiveness of industrial training.
