Abstract

This project contain inappropriate decisions on design concept and material at the early stage of development always lead to huge cost involvement and ultimately drive towards premature component or product failure. This project emphasizes on simultaneous decision using analytical hierarchy process (AHP) at the conceptual design stage to assist designers in making the right decisions during the development process of products. The development of automotive car battery was chosen as a case study to illustrate the use of concurrent engineering (CE) tool in making the right decision at the early stage of development process. One of the useful CE tools can be employed in determining the most appropriate design concept and material is analytical hierarchy process (AHP). This project described the application of AHP to assist designers to effectively evaluate various conceptual design alternatives and materials. This project revealed that the Design Concept 3 and High Density Polyethylene with the weight of 0.386 (38.6%) and 0.282 (28.2%) are the best decisions on design concept and material respectively
