Abstract

Bumper is a shield made of steel, aluminum, rubber, or plastic that is mounted on the front and rear of a passenger car. When a low speed collision occurs, the bumper system absorbs the shock to prevent or reduce damage to the car. Present bumper shows when colliding occurs in low-speed collisions, consumers pay sky high prices for the damaged part such as headlights, hoods, and other parts that are expensive to repair that have to be replaced. Therefore, the best way to overcome this problem is to develop a recoiling or reshapable car bumper which will not deform permanently upon the low collision impact. As the final design concept was chosen and the recoiling car bumper system consists of three major components include the support beam, energy absorbing material and protective skin. Then, the swept curvature bumper is developed using SolidWorks 2003 3-D CAD software. In material selection, for the bumper fascia the chosen material is polyurethane elastomer, the energy absorber made from combined polyurethane foam filled with honeycomb pattern, and supported beam made from structural aluminum alloy. For the final approac~ virtual prototype of front and rear recoiling car bumper had been optimized design and model via SolidWorks 2010 software as the final visual prototype 3-D model design for both recoiling car bumper
