Abstract

Solar energy is the most readily available source of energy and it does not belong to anybody. In Malaysia, solar energy can found on the day light which is from 9am to 5pm. However, solar energy is intermittent and there is no solar energy at night. Hot water storage tank was designed to store hot water. There are 2 methods to produce hot water which are active and passive system. Termosyphon method is the one example of passive systems where the system is simple, cheap and there are no pumps or other electrical devices. Usually as termosyphon method, a storage tank will put at the highest level to produce the water natural gravity circulation. The system produced hot water in the solar collector and rises to the top layer of the storage tank while cold water still remaining at the lower layer and substituted the hot water. In the storage tank, high water temperature produced at the top layer and the lower temperature is at the bottom of the storage tank. These performances are influenced by density. A suitable insulator is used to cover the storage tank to avoid any heat losses to the surrounding, so that, the hot water can be used on night, cold day and save the electrical supply. This project is to analyze the temperature distribution within 8 hours with 2 methods using a MATLAB Simulation Software for 2 dimension and CFX Simulation Software for 3 dimension. Some assumptions have been done to simulate the problem. Comparison will be done from both simulations where results show temperature distributions are different.
