Abstract

Ripeness of fruit can be determine by several parameters of size, weight, texture, fragrance of fruit and color. Mango is chosen among tropical fruit in Malaysia to be tested in this project. Normally, the classification maturity of mangoes is done manually by sense of sight to distinguish its maturity based on its skin color characteristics. This method required to use a lot of man power for the sorting process according to its stage of mango’s ripeness. When the ripe mango and partially ripe mango store together it will fasten the ripeness and cause it become over ripe easily. In this project, color recognition system that used for fruit ripeness enable to save more time and reduce man power in the process of sorting according to the level of ripeness of mangoes, in the same time it could reduce mango from over ripe. The objectives in this project is to develop automatic sorting system that enable to determine different stages of ripeness of mango by using color sensor and analyze the efficiency of the system on color sorting based on level of ripeness. Every color has its own frequency of RGB value, therefore RGB color sensor applied in this project as an input to determine and compare the frequency of RGB value on different stages of ripeness of mangoes. After that, the level of ripeness of fruit whether is unripe, half ripe, ripe or over ripe will display on LCD screen. Next, sorting process will be done based on the level of ripeness of mangoes by using servo motor and Arduino Uno microcontroller as a controller module. The recognition rate and accuracy of this color recognition system is calculated by using confusion matrix.
