Abstract
The environmental monitoring in industry is commonly performed through manual scheduled measurement that is labour-intensive as well as has a limited window of data for comprehensive analysis. In an endless cycle, environmental monitoring is conducted monthly and subjected to the requirements of the client’s or by the Department of Environment (DOE). The popular area of environmental monitoring is within the construction, treatment, sewage, heavy industry, etc. where the seasonal monitoring is required to comply with the set regulations by the authorities. The conventional practice has limited resources and a lack of data to analyse the issues related to a specific industry primarily related to environmental issues. The project is to develop an Internet of Things (IoT) based environmental monitoring system that measures vibration, noise, temperature, humidity, Carbon Dioxide and Liquefied Petroleum Gas in a point of measurement. The proposed portable and user-friendly environmental monitoring system that can relay real-time environmental data on 24/7 using remote sensing method from monitoring stations to the monitoring centre without human intervention. Such a system will be able to visualise the data to the clients and inspecting personnel if there are abnormal readings or readings recorded above the set threshold based on the DOE requirements. The clients should be able to promptly respond to the location and ensure the environmental readings are kept under the set limit for safe industrial operation. With the proposed system, the data from sensors will be stored for future reference and users can view the raw data trending for any set period of time from the IoT platform. Analysing the data will further benefit the clients or users to efficiently work within the set regulations in ensuring a better environmental friendly industry. Such a system will both benefit the related industry as well as the DOE.
