Abstract
Developing cost-effective and efficient water treatment techniques that can successfully eliminate various pollutants while prioritizing environmental and public safety is crucial. One promising avenue of research involves utilizing seashells as capping materials. Seashells, readily available waste products, possess unique characteristics that render them valuable in water treatment applications. This innovative approach aims to leverage the inherent properties of seashells to contribute to effective and environmentally friendly water purification methods. The primary objective of this thesis is to assess the efficacy of clam and Asian clam shells in the removal of contaminants from water. Within this thesis, six distinct experimental configurations were established, each comprising varying layers of clam and Asian clam, within a controlled environment. Throughout the 22-day incubation period, parameters such as pH value, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, and salinity were systematically monitored. The findings reveal that Asian clams exhibit superior efficacy compared to clam shells in water treatment applications. Particularly, Asian clams of 0.5mm size in the second setup, denoted as LS500/2, demonstrated optimal reactivity for water treatment purposes. Notably, all experimental setups proved successful in maintaining the monitored parameters below permissible limits. In conclusion, the investigation underscores the potential utility of clam and Asian clam shells as capping materials for the removal of contaminants from water.
