Abstract

Clean water resources have decreased over the past few years due to uncontrolled water pollution. Statistics show that India, China, and Nigeria are the top three countries suffering from water pollution problems which have caused massive deaths yearly. Water pollution can adversely affect health, the environment, and the economy. In Malaysia, industry and the agricultural sector are the causes that contribute to the deterioration of water quality. In addition, tourism also harms the status of water pollution due to the dumping of garbage that can contaminate river water. Currently, the Melaka River has been reported to be polluted and cause death to fish species. The Melaka State Government has taken legal action, water resource policy, and exposure through religious and moral education about the importance of the river. However, implementing projects to maintain the quality of the river's water has not yet changed the level of water pollution to a lower level. This problem continues to a higher level and becomes more dangerous. Therefore, the primary source of water pollution needs to be studied and determined, especially in the spatial variation in the Malacca River. In this study, the "Hydro Quality System" is a device that will be created to monitor water quality in the Melaka River. The collaboration between the students of Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and dan the Perbadanan Pembangunan Sungai dan Pantai Melaka (PPSPM)to use the HydroQS device as a water quality monitoring device in the Melaka River is an effort to reduce water pollution that occurs in the Melaka River. This study will carry out field tests to prove that the device created will positively affect the quality of water in the Melaka River. This study also aims to test the sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT) technology applied to HydroQS devices based on industrial revolution 4.0. Industrial revolution 4.0 is significant nowadays for saving time and human energy daily. Advances in communication technology are available such as smartphones that can be connected to other devices, such as sharing information, sending data, and making decisions through the data received quickly. With this, the system on the HydroQS device that can connect with a smartphone through an application is one of the technological achievements based on the industrial revolution 4.0.
