Abstract

Grinding machining is commonly used as finishing process to achieve the high-quality demand of the surface that has low surface roughness, high form accuracy, and good surface integrity. To obtain the good surface quality, effective lubrication and cooling need to be considered during the machining. Thus, the primary aim of this research is to compare the effect of conventional fluid and microfluid as coolant on mild steel using grinding machining. The microfluid is the mixture of deionized water, quarry dust and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) while the conventional fluid used is deionized water (0.00 wt%). The effect of quarry dust microfluid concentration, namely 0.02 wt.%, 0.06 wt.%, 0.10 wt% and 0.50 wt.%, on the surface finish and surface morphology of mild steel using grinding machining were investigated. From this study, the result showed that quarry dust microfluid produced better surface morphology and surface roughness compared to that of conventional fluid. One-way ANOVA and boxplot were used to analyse data of the surface roughness. The result showed that there is significance difference between the concentrations of the microfluid and 0.06 wt% is the optimum concentration of quarry dust microfluid.
