Abstract

In the attempt to minimize the harmonic disturbances created by the non-linear loads the choice of the active power filters comes out to improve the filtering efficiency and to solve many issues existing with classical passive filters. One of the key points for a proper implementation of an active filter is to use a good method for current/voltage reference generation. This research is to propose a harmonic detection method using hysteresis current controller of a single-phase active power filter and programming algorithm to get peak voltage fundamental.Full-bridge single-phase inverter will be designed as active power filter to cancel out the harmonics generated from the nonlinear load. The hysteresis current controller of active power filter will be accomplishing by monitoring the current to the non-linear load and then generating gate signals for the inverter to create a current waveform that will cancel the harmonics in the load current. The objectives of this research is to design and developed of a single phase shunt active power filter for house hold appliances and to build an active power filter controller that improve voltage quality at the terminal of consumer point. The proposed hardware and software are designed to mitigate harmonic produced by house hold appliances. The methodology of this research are simulation and experimental of the prototype of the proposed APF hardware. The design of the active power filter will be verified by doing the simulation using the capabilities of MATLAB/Simulink.Comparison of simulation and experimental results have to been done to shows a close agreement on house hold appliances to reduced harmonic which is acceptable with referring to IEEE-519 limits. The prototype is designed to compensate the distorted current produced by nonlinear load.
