Abstract

Since polymeric insulations are well accepted in high voltage application,a large number of important studies and research activities for improvement on their performance had been done. One of the key indicators for polymeric insulation surface performance is by determining its tracking and erosion effect. To improve the tracking and erosion performance of outdoor polymeric insulations used in high voltage applications, the understanding of its deterioration and degradation are must.BS EN 60587 standard gives a procedure for finding the tracking and erosion resistance of outdoor polymeric insulation samples under laboratory conditions for ac voltages. The proposed polymeric insulation material under study is silicon rubber as a matrix with alongside of Alumina Trihydrate (ATH) and Inclined plane (IP) tracking test conducted to simulate the high voltage stress on the samples.IP tracking and erosion tests similar to BS EN 60587 will be conducted under both positive and negative dc voltages for silicon rubber samples to understand the phenomena occurring during dc stress. The fundamental leakage current (LC) studies during the tests and the eroded mass at the end of the tests will be monitored. Then,Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) will be conducted to understand the dispersion of ATH and the changes in surface morphology in both polarities. The results from LC behavior, eroded mass and SEM studies will suggest the effect of both positive and negative dc stresses on the tracking and erosion performance of for silicon rubber. To verify the severity of DC effects on the performance of silicon rubber,it will be compared with standard ac test.At the end of the research, better understanding on fundamental of deterioration on silicon rubber under positive and negative dc stress could be attained. Thus it will be give significant contribution the on the knowledge of silicon rubber and polymeric materials.
