Abstract

This is a project in purpose to study the comparison between AC and DC of Inclined Plane Test for tracking and erosion of insulating material.Insulation plays important role in order to determine the reliability and availability of an electrical power apparatus in power system. With a good insulation system,it will give a better design, performance and safety of the apparatus. Inclined Plane Test is very suitable to check the insulating materials properties under the influence of several reasons. This test was proposed by Mathes and Gowan in 1961.With a good type of variable AC/DC source, it will give a good result on behalf the test conducted. One of the first observations of the increased severity of DC over AC stress on polymeric materials was observed in 1988.After a year,Guan used DC instead of AC voltage in the IPT and reported the damage level of samples tested by + DC was greater than –DC [4].Besides that, Moreno and Gorur [6] performed AC and DC IPTs on polymeric materials and noted that a substantial reduction in the tracking and erosion resistance of the polymeric materials tested was observed with DC stress; in comparison to AC.This proves that, the DC result shows inconsistencies and not conclusive results.
