Abstract

Optical filter that utilizes silicon microring resonator (MRR) has been the promising element for future optical integrated circuits due to its various advantages such as small size,low insertion loss and high Q-factor.The main objectives were to model and develop silicon device based on MRR which suitable for WDM systems.The trade-off between design parameters such as ring radius,gap size and width of the core to the MRR performance has been successfully investigated by using Taguchi Method.The performance in term of insertion loss (IL),extinction ratio (ER),free spectral range (FSR) and Q-factor was determined.The performance of higher order microrings in the form of series-coupled (SCMRR) and parallel-coupled (PCMRR) were also investigated.Via simulation,single MRR produced the FSR of 42.0 nm with IL of 0.5 dB and ER of 25.0 dB.The 5th order SCMRR produced FSR of 44.5 nm with ER of 11.5 nm and IL of 2.5 dB.Meanwhile,for the 5th order PCMRR,the FSR is 42.6 nm with ER of 48.0 nm and IL of 0.5 dB.To prove the potential of MRR as a promising element for interconnect system,MRR (de)multiplexer and sensor based were also designed.The (de)multiplexer achieved high FSR,low loss,crosstalk around 20dB,in which proven to be suitable for WDM system.Moreover,high sensitivity optical sensor is developed with the sensitivity of 1x10-6 nm/1℃.
