Abstract

In high power and high speed application such as electric vehicle and aerospace industries, conventional electric motors and drives are subject to maintenance, longtime life and efficiency issues. This lead to the use of a self-bearing permanent magnet AC (PMAC) drives or selfbearing PMAC motors that has the advantages of motoring function and magnetic bearings. Its utilizing a magnetic levitation force to suspend a rotor without any mechanical contact. The proposed self-bearing PMAC system consist of a self-bearing motor with suspension winding on the stator,a set of power switching modules to energize the motor, the controller,a gap sensor and dedicated electronics circuitry to provide the feedback required to control the rotor displacement and rotation. The accurate mathematical model of the self-bearing PMAC motor will be developed assisted by Ansys Maxwell Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software. The relationship of motoring force, suspension force, supply voltage and current will be establish to ensure the rotor rotates at a center axis through independents control. The developed self-bearing PMAC control system is expected to provide fast response and stable operation even with variation in load, thus minimize the issues of conventional electric motors.
