Abstract

Traffic light is a signaling device which is designed to monitor and ensure traffic smoothness. When the traffic lights malfunction, traffic congestion would be the result. Traffic congestion is always the main problem to the road users and also the current system which is called manual fault alert approach is inefficient. This approach is only waiting the complaint from the road users thorough a call service report on traffic lights malfunction. Real time traffic light fault detection and management system is designed to detect faults report the fault via Short Message Service (SMS) to the respective authorities. The faults can be detected by using two detection methods which can be categorized as electrical and mechanical. Once the faults detected, an alert message will send out by using Global System for Mobile (GSM) modem in SMS form to the maintaining station. The received message will be stored in the database which will be displayed on the fault detection management application. The alert message contains of the traffic light identification (ID), location and type of fault detected. The automated traffic light fault detection and management system caters a few important features such as to reduce the traffic congestion, enhance public safety, reduce maintenance time and delay of knowing the fault in regards traffic light malfunction. Such an approach is able to increase the reliability traffic light which could be into existing traffic light system.
