Abstract

Nowadays, wireless communication system is growing rapidly. In order to meet the miniaturization requirements of portable communication equipment, there are many attention focused on the compact microstrip antenna. Most of the wireless communication system required high data rate and channel capacity. Hence, MIMO system is introduced to provide efficient performance to the wireless communication system. The objective of this project is to design, simulate and fabricate a compact tri-polarized antenna for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system with operating frequency at 2.4 GHz. All antenna designs are simulated by using CST software. The material used for all designs in simulation and fabrication is FR4 board. Compact tri-polarized antenna is a combination with three different types of polarization. First of all, the single polarizations for linear polarized and circular polarized antennas are designed. Then, dual-polarized antenna is designed. Finally, the compact tri-polarized antenna is designed with the combination of three different polarizations, which are linear polarization, left-handed circular polarization and right-handed circular polarization. The compact tri-polarized antenna in this project consists of three ports on a circular patch. The simulation result shows that each port for the compact tri-polarized antenna is covered the frequency of 2.4GHz with the return loss less than -10dB. Port 1 and Port 3 which is adjacent with each other obtained left-handed and right-handed circular polarization respectively. Then, Port 2 is performed in linear polarization. The axial ratio for both circular polarizations is less than 3dB. Besides, the axial ratio for linear polarization is above 3dB. Therefore, this compact tri-polarized antenna capable to perform in three different polarizations is suitable to apply in MIMO system that requires polarization diversity.
