Abstract

Long periods of isolation can lead to sleep disturbances, emotional instability and depression; these would disrupt the work performance of an individual; for example: fisherman and astronaut. Therefore, a Personal Communicator might be required in order to reduce the feeling of isolation and ensure the well-being of the person. This Personal Communicator, will be designed to provide handy information, communication and entertainment medium to the users. The Personal Communicator (P.C) will be equipped with: Communicator (Internet/Email, Phone, Videophone, Camera); Entertainment (TV/Cable ,Radio, home entertainment, Diary / Organiser ); Data Provider (Weather information, Navigation Information, Mission information and status,Astronomy map). The term content based is referred to the technology of broadcasting audio and video files over a network. Because of the often very large size of audio and video files even after compression, this will allow end users to begin experiencing the audio or video files while the files are still downloading. In this research, the system with streaming capability has been studied for personal computer and personal digital assistant (PDA). The streaming can be done by using Wifi or Bluetooth technologies The Personal Communicator will be developed by using a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) with WiFi capabilities. Some modifications on the PDA have been done in order to upgrade the application to suit specific requirements.
