Abstract

The worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) technology is a certification mark for the IEEE 802.16 standard. WiMAX offers a true broadband connection that supports multiple usage scenarios, including fixed, portable, and mobile access ru>ing the same network infrastructure. WiMAX was designed from the ground up to be an all-Internet Protocol (IP) technology that is optimized for high-throughput and real-time data applications. WiMAX specifications have inbuilt quality of service (QoS) mechanisms and has extensive capability to support mobility and handovers: horizontal and vertical or intertechnology handovers Quality of Service (QoS) has become an important consideration for supporting variety of applications that utilize the network resources. These applications include voice over internet protocol and multimedia services. IEEE802.16e is a new netWork which is designed with quality of service as implemented by the WiMAX networks. The project is aim to study in detail the architecture of IEEE 802.16 standard and to simulate Voice over Internet Protocol (V oiP) and video transmission over the 802.16 network. Performance analysis of these two real time application will be done. Network Simulator 2 which is a popular and powerful simulation tool for the simulation of packet-switched networks, will be used to design and simulate the IEEE 802.16 network The project is expected to obtain the performance analysis of VoiP and video transmission based on QoS parameters such as data rate and packet loss are analyze for different types of voice and video applications.
