Abstract

The automotive industry is a booming industry in Malaysia. Vehicle air conditioning systems is a need to Malaysian due to the warm and high humidity condition. Due to this scenario, air-condition becomes one of the important component's for vehicles in Malaysia. Vehicle air-condition production is a task generally accomplished by technicians and operators. This task need to be done according to factory rules and to be checked by production engineers for approval and also matters related to defect repair instructions. Generally, it is expected that the expert engineer and the technician have good knowledge on how the production process functions. In addition, due to the increasing complexity of the production line, the voluminous user's manuals and shortage of experienced personnel complicates the process of training. The main objective of the development of an expert fault diagnosis system is to achieve an integrated diagnostic procedure for air-conditioning system. The developed system is to be able to diagnose the probable cause(s) of the defect by tracing the quality and production information at various steps of vehicle air conditioning manufacturing processes. Implementing such a system significantly shorten the time consumed in air-conditioning defect diagnosis, increasing the consistency of diagnosing decision-making, better utilizes of management information system. In addition, it can act as an advisory and training tool to engineer and technician. A case study was conducted to verify the capability of the developed system. The developed system helps the manufacturing engineers to shorten the diagnosis time and increase the efficiency in the production line.
