Abstract

In this study, the effect of re-solution followed by aging treatment on the mechanical properties of aluminum alloy 6061 T6 was investigated. The specimens were re-solution heat treatment at 550°C for 2 hours and quenched in water followed by aging treatment at different conditions. Some specimens were left to naturally age at room temperature for 24 hours and the others were re-artificial aged at various temperatures for 2 hours. The impact toughness and hardness of heat treated aluminum alloy were determined by Charpy impact test and Brinell hardness test respectively. Though, the microstructure characterization was examined using optical microscope. The fracture mode and surface contour of heat treated aluminum alloy were also observed after impact testing. The results show that the hardness and impact toughness of aluminum alloy after re-solution heat treatment and undergo to the natural aging were decreased compared to as received condition because the re-solution heat treatment might dissolved the strengthen element of coarse MgiSi in the a.-matrix of aluminum. However, these values were gradually increased with re-artificial aging temperature. This is due to the precipitation of fine MgiSi in the phase of a.-matrix of aluminum during re-artificial aging treatment. It was clearly seen that aluminum alloy fractured in ductile fracture mode with cup-and-cone surface contour.
