Abstract

Noise is one of the most widely experienced problems in industrial working environment nowadays. The occurrence of noise is therefore can combine with other hazards of industrial environment such as chemical, dust and heat stress. Noise is therefore recognized in the industry as one of many occupational health hazards. In Malaysia, noise exposure in the work place is legislated under the Factories and Machinery Act (Noise Exposure) Regulations 1989, and the Occupational and Safety Health Act 1994. These regulations make it mandatory for noise levels and workers' exposure to noise be measured, assessed, and controlled. If exposure is infrequent, the ear may temporarily lose the ability to detect some sound. This research project is conducted experimentally, which was focused on obtaining noise contours to map out the entire workplace or the measurement site where different scenarios can be evaluated. Noise measurements were conducted at one of the semiconductor factory in Batu Berendam, Malacca. In an area such as a machinery room in the factory, there are a number of closely placed noise sources emitted by the machines. Basics theories and formulation such as the sound pressure level, room constant and the directivity index are used as some contributions to the analysis. Then, the simulation of the noise exposure can be done through noise mapping technique, 'which can be mapped out by using AutoCAD. It was found that there are some differences between the experimental and the theoretical values of the noise levels and it is shown by the calculations of the error percentage from both values. Parameters such as the sound absorption coefficients for the room surfaces and the area of the room surfaces participated importantly to determine the relevant experimental and theoretical values for the noise measurements. By generating a noise mapping illustrating the distribution of noise, one is provided with a graphical representation of sound pressure levels, that is the level of noise within the workplace and moreover, it can meets or compliance with the rules and regulations required as stated in the Factories and Machinery (Noise Exposure) Regulations 1989.
