Abstract

Kline ( 1995) introduced the Linked Chain Model stressed that the innovation development of a product consists of five pathways of innovation processes. It involves the processes of market finding, analytic design, design and test, redesign and produce, and commercialization. These innovation processes run one after the other throughout the innovation development. Carvalho and Ferreira (2001) stressed that information and communication technology (ICT) is used to accelerate the speed of knowledge creation and information flow through the network. Ten types of application that have the same common features namely, • Intranet-based systems • Electronic document management (EDM) • Groupware • Workflow • Artificial intelligence-based systems • Business intelligence (BI) • Knowledge map systems • Innovation support tools • Competitive intelligence tools • Knowledge portals This project would like to explore the usage of the ICT applications by the Malaysian industry including the small and medium enterprises (SME). The usage of ICT might contribute to the sharing of information during the processes of innovation development of a product. Rogers (1995) defined diffusion as a process of communication through a certain channel that creates the adoption of technology until it reaches a critical mass. Incorporating this definition and the Linked Chain Model, the level of ICT diffusion can be established when the critical mass of the usage of ICT application used by the industry is at the specific level of innovation development.
