Abstract

Safety management systems (SMS) are a management system that is based on safety criteria standards and performance. The successful implementation of SMS can help to prevent accidents in industries. However, in the construction industry implementation of SMS is always a failure in the case of Malaysia, although the regulations and guidelines are available, the safety conditions in the workplace are still adverse and below expectation. This research to evaluates and ranks factors of SMS implementation, which was influenced by construction supply chain. Respondent are chosen among Malaysian contractors working in processing plants. The research intended to investigate issues surrounding the successful and satisfactory delivery of SMS solely from Malaysian contractors‘ perspective and to prove a theory related to the reasons for those issues. The data collection used to achieve the aim was by distributed questionnaire. The questionnaire was sent to 120 contractors in Southern Region; 30 responses were received and validated. The data collected from the contractors interrogated using descriptive and correlation analysis. The results showed all variable are significant and positive relationship between reliance cultures, organizational processes and uncertainty of work condition.
