Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate the suitability of energy saving potential through duty cycling technique on air conditioning and mechanical ventilation system without disturbing occupant thermal comfort in UTeM’s industrial campus building. The suitability of duty cycling technique was investigated by monitoring the current thermal comfort through measured temperature distributions of three most critical zones, M, E and W by using testo 635-2 thermocouple data logger. Results shown the range of temperature distribution between these zones is too high, where at certain time, it can reach up to 7.1°C. Most of the time, indoor air temperature in zone M is below minimum Malaysian Standard of 23°C while in zones E and W, it exceed maximum Malaysian Standard of 26°C before 10.00 am and after 5.00 pm respectively. It shows that occupants in zone M are over cooled for most of the time, and at certain times occupant in zone E and W received inadequate cool air thus results to human thermal discomfort, possibly reduce their working effectiveness and at the same time, wasting energy. The imbalance temperature distribution with higher minimum to maximum Malaysian Standard temperature range between zones where these zones are controlled by the same AHU room means that there is an opportunity for energy saving. Therefore, it is suggested to minimize this temperature distribution, before the duty cycling technique can be implemented. This can be done by passive design technique, rework of air distribution systems and balancing.
