Abstract

The pwpose of this project is to design and build lightning and switching pulse generator in a high voltage circuit by using the ignition coil. The generator ignites the spark up to 20kV and it will be measured by using a special custom made probe to display the output signal on the oscilloscope. As this is a high voltage p roject, the output signal from the ignition coil needs to be determined by measuring the circuit. The important thing here is to know the characteristics of the lightning and switching waveform. The measuring part is according to the output voltage versus the distance. By using 555 timer driver in which it can be in two different modes that are astable and monostable mode. In this project, 555 timer driver which is in an astable mode is applied to produce the pulses continuously. The timer output signal will be displayed to ensure it will drive the igniter in the safe and correct mode. This project can be applied as a standard lightning surge model in the future if the original circuit is connected to certain specific routes.
