Abstract

EDWA is an optical amplifier that uses a waveguide to boost an optical signal, analogous to an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). It also for amplifying and controlling signal power in optical transmission system. For a single channel system, the gain variation is not a problem. However, as the number of channels increases, the transmission problem arises because a conventional EDWA has intrinsic non-uniform gain. EDWA gain depends on the large contribution from the device parameter such as erbium-ion concentration, amplifier length and pump power. To increase the gain- bandwidth of an amplified lightwave system several methods can be used [1]. In this project, an improvement of optical transmission system will be investigated by adding Fiber Bragg Grating in EDWA which it is therefore can be used as an in line optical filter to block certain wavelengths, or acting as a wavelength-specific reflector. The design of EDWA using Fiber Bragg Grating is developed by using Optysystem software and it also responsible to analyze the performance characteristics in term of gain, the effect of Erbium ions concentration, pump power, signal power and waveguide length.
