Abstract
Both carburizing and boronizing are thenno-chemical surface hardening treatments in which carbon and boron atoms diffused into metal substrate to fonn metallic carburized and boronized layer, providing high hardness, corrosion resistance, and 3-10 times increasing service life. These types of surface treatments are widely used in many engineering applications. The purpose of this research ts to investigate mechanical properties and kinetics of atoms in carburized and boronized ferrous alloys. Low alloy carbon steel (AISI 1 020) and low alloy tool steel (A2) are used as test materials. Some of samples are carburized and some are boronized. Layer thickness of the samples is examined in order to determine the kinetics of carbon and boron atoms diffusion inside the alloys. Tensile, compression and impact tests are carried out in order to investigate the effects of both treatments on mechanical properties ofthe tested alloys. This research will definitely provide new data especially m mechanical properties of carburized and boronized ferrous alloys. The findings from this research will be beneficial in surface engineering as well as in structural engineering areas.
