Abstract

Strontium ferrite of chemical composition SrFe120 19 was developed through a solid state reaction after the iron (Ill) oxide, Fe30 4 and strontium carbonate SrC03 diffused at temperature above 1200°C. The ferrite powder was prepared through a conventional powder metallurgy technique involving processes like mixing, calcining, milling and sintering. Microstructures of both, raw and calcined products were evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and their chemical compositions were confirmed by the X-ray diffractometer (XRD). Milling parameters such as a ratio between material and balls, milling speed and amount of liquid used are closely monitored. Milling performance was evaluated based on the spectrum of particle size distribution produced by Particle Size Analyzer. It was found that ball milling process could not produce particle size distribution with an average of 1 ~m in diameter. The process however can turn coarse calcined product into powder with particle size of 1 0 ~m in diameter
