Abstract

The complexity and diversity in the rapidly changing and globalised world of today requires engineers to possess good communication skills. This study investigates if Technical Communication 1 (BLHW 2402) that is offered to the engineering undergraduates of UTeM at the Degree level is effective in nurturing them with a good command of written and spoken English that is crucial at their future workplace. The instruments that were used for data collection in the study are survey questionnaires and recorded interviews. The findings of the evaluation by the undergraduates reveals that on the overall the effectiveness of thi s course is at a moderate level whereas the evaluation by the lecturers reveals that this course is highly effecti ve. Anyway. both lecturers and students bring to evidence that the course content and teaching materials are effective at only a moderate leveL Analysis of mean value and T -test analysis show that Bumiputra students rate assessments as having a much lower level of effectivenes s. Thus, this is indicative of the fact that the course needs to be revised in terms of the course content. teaching materials and assessments used. The respondents have also provided viable solutions to improve on the course.
