Abstract

ln motorsport engineering, weight savings is all important. The application of fiber reinforced composite materials in motorsport suspension system designs towards that goal have allow signjficant weight savings to be achieved compared to traditional metal alloys as well as improving the structural performance of the components such as in term of durability, stiffness, rugher temperature resistance and fatigue resistance. Therefore, for similar purposes, composite materials are used to develop a new double wishbone suspension push rod for Formula Student race car. In this research, the development of the composite suspension push rod covers multiple stages such as 3-D component design, material selection, suspension load analysis, composite analysis, component fabrication and performance tests. The results obtained showed that the composite suspension push rod is able to withstand the load as per design requirement with better lightweight property compared to the low carbon steel push rod and helps to produce a faster and lightweight race car through the use of weight efficient components.
