Abstract
This paper focuses on Erbium Doped Fibre Amplifier (EDFA) impairments in Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) networks. The main impairment in EDF A operations is the power transient effect due to signal power fluctuations in WDM networks. The power transient leads to degradation of the optical communication systems caused by the number of channels changes during network reconfiguration. The WDM channels additional or removal operations varies the gain at the amplifier because of the cross-gain saturation occurs at certain input power and thus, leads to power transient. In order to overcome the transient power. gain at the amplifier can be controlled by using Optically Gain Controlled (OGC) EDF A. The importance of OGC-EDF A is to keep the gain at a constant value. As far as the power fluctuation is concerned. the impairments of single EDF A fed by optical burst traffic are also investigated. The problem with the optical burst traffic is the long burst idle intervals permits the fibre amplifier gain to exceed its average gain values. Finally, simulation results ofOGC-EDFA applications analysis are present in this thesis.
