Abstract

Over the past two decades, the electric power industry's involvement in power Distribution Automation (DA) has been principally focused on remote monitoring and control of the distribution systems and their equipments. Electrical distribution systems have seen enormous changes since the early days of power generation. Advances in metering and communications have meant that electric power utilities worldwide are increasingly adopting the two way communications control and monitoring technology of electric power distribution system to provide better and more efficient services to electric consumers. Power line carrier (PLC) is a communications method where signals are carried across al ready existing power lines, rather than through other mediums such as optical fibers or radio waves. The utilization of networks and supervising the actual operation condition of apparatus and equipment in premises will lead to a large energy saving by implementing automatic distribution controls. In order to acquire data about the actual condition of power consumption, an online energy monitoring system is developed. This paper presents the online energy monitoring system via power line carrier in UTeM campus, its features and benefits. The system consists of data acquisition, communication protocol and processing within energy meter and data software.
