Abstract

This project is to design a versatile four digits 7-segment numerical display. With four digits, numbers from -999 to 9999 can be displayed. This versatile numerical display can be used as a counter, numbers display, timers and analog value display. A PIC microcontroller is used to convert any input such as numbers (via keypad), or any input signal such as pressure, temperature or speed (via sensor) to be displayed. By using 7-segment displays, values can be read directly and accurately. Values can also be recorded automatically into a computer for further processing. A 4x4 keypad is used as input numbers. The number will be displayed on 7-segment when the key is pressed. The keypad has functions for clearing the display and for up/down manual counter with reset. A temperature sensor is used as the analog input for the project. The output is a precision digital temperature read out from 0°C to 100°C. This project also has an automatic counter that counts the moving object across the motion sensor. The project is completed with an additional one hour timer. All these functions can be selected by pressing the four buttons provided on the circuit board. The LED indicator is turned on when a function is selected.
