Abstract

This project proposes an integrated survival horror game element for a dynamic gameplay experience from a first-person perspective. This paper presents the development and evaluation for “Containment Breach” a game designed with several key elements: uncanny valley enemy design, horror game sound, high fidelity graphics, dynamic lighting which includes white light, red light and flickering lights, and a diegetic enemy motion sensor device. This approach emphasises the psychological impact of these elements on players, aiming to evoke intense fear and suspense. As of the reasons of implementing these features in this project, this project founded many problems in the game development of survival horror game genres including the limited use of innovative horror mechanics, lack of effective enemy design, poor sound design, and the lack of uniqueness and engaging narratives. By implementing these proposed features, this project is determined to tackle these development problems to be of use to other developers in future game developments. To test out the effectiveness of this project, surveys and game test were conducted with university students and younger students through the method of handing out questionnaires and interviews to the testers. This project expects that most participants found the game to be exceptionally scary, validating the effectiveness of our design choices shows that the combination of these elements significantly contributes to the heightened sense of fear and tension experienced by players. In conclusion, this research highlights the importance of integrating various sensory and environmental factors in the development of survival horror games. These findings can inform future game design practices, particularly in the genre of horror, to create more engaging and terrifying player experiences.
