Abstract
Commercial vehicle accidents, particularly lightweight truck rollovers, are frequent and often fatal. Rollovers have a disproportionately high mortality rate, affecting both drivers and passengers due to various contributing factors. This project aims to develop a tailored Rollover Warning Device (RWD) for commercial vehicles, emphasizing those with a higher center of gravity height-to-track width ratio. The Roadway Departure Warning (RWD) system employs a rollover index algorithm, evaluating a vehicle's stability based on load transfer ratio (LTR). Validated through computer models and real-world data, the device prompts driver intervention for potentially hazardous movements. MATLAB optimizes block model parameters for the rollover index. The algorithm, based on Odenthal's approach, demonstrates superior performance, emphasizing driver steering and velocity over lateral acceleration. Tested on TruckSim and MATLAB/Simulink, the modified Odenthal algorithm shows a 12.3% improvement in Time-to-Warn (TTW), enhancing driver response time and effectively reducing rollover incidents.
