Abstract

This project aims to analyze the works body posture on material handling activity at Golden Clay Industry (GCI) and suggest the proper solution based on the problem that occurs. Based on observation, the most ergonomic risk factor activity found at the workstation is repetitive, heavy lifting, and awkward body posture. Each time, the workers are required to lift the clay manually to the pallet for packaging. It reported that the workers experience serious back pain especially in the lower back area and fatigue due to the repetitive motion in handling the material. Furthermore, this problem can affect the productivity of the workstation and can lead to Musculoskeletal Disorder (MSD). MSD are injuries and disorders that affect the human body’s movement or musculoskeletal system such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and so on. To overcome this problem, a few methods had been conducted. First, important data such as anthropometry measurement, workstation measurement, interview, questionnaire, and time study have been taken. Then, this data will be used for the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) analysis to validate the poor body posture of the workers by using anthropometry data collection. Thus, the proper works body posture will be suggested due to the problem faced by the workers. This analysis will be performed using CATIA v5 software. Next, the other method that was used to improve the work's body posture by proposed the design of a material handling device. To select the best design of the workstation, the House of Quality (HOQ) method has been used referring to worker's requirements. The chosen design will be applied using CATIA software and the analysis for new body posture of the workers been performed using RULA analysis as a suggestion to improve the works body posture. Lastly, the productivity of the current workstation and redesigned workstation have been calculated.
