Abstract

The aim of the MYeHalal system implemented by JAKIM is to facilitate the halal certification in Malaysia. However, this effort is seen to be hardly achievable, considering the discouraged acceptance of the MYeHalal among system users. Some halal applicants consider the system is too complex and complicated to use, resulting in prolonged or rejected application. This has caused the company to hire external consultant agency to perform the halal certification application for them, and this causes unnecessary spending to the company. Considering the usage of the MYeHalal system that combined the interaction between the social element (MYeHalal system user and certifier) and technical elements (MYeHalal system),this research applied Actor-Network Theory (ANT), a theory that enables equal treatment of analysis for both human (social) and non-human (technical) elements in one analysis, namely the translation process.Framed by ANT,this study has conducted semi-structured interviews with 14 halal applicants and 3 officers from JAKIM and JAIM for data collection.Three problems were categorised as technical problems, applicants' problems and operational problems that hinder the success of MYeHalal system were identified.Besides, further investigation also revealed four main factors of applicants, technology, guidelines and organisations that would cooperatively influence the usage of the MYeHalal system. The detailed information of each factors was explained to get clear understanding on their roles towards the online halal certification application. From that, this study concludes that the socio-technical model should be referred to enhance better and sustainable usage of the MYeHalal system. This research is anticipated to be applied by both certifier and halal applicants to determine the important parameters that could affect the usage of the online halal certification application system. However,as this research is done specifically among halal food/beverages/food supplement manufacturers in Melaka, Malaysia and it is limited on the MYeHalal system usage, thus, it is suggested that further research to investigate on other scope of certification schemes, such as a wider context of study at national level and investigating other online halal certification application systems that are developed by other halal certifier's body worldwide.
