Abstract

Student engagement has been recognized as one of the essential aspect of influencing the Students' learning performance at the university. The level of learning engagement in each of student is a complicated subject and is not completely understood and this remains an obstacle in achieving the required information in shaping the design and delivery of the curriculum. With a growing number of educational technologies and learning management systems (LMSs) in campus-based educational, blended teaching has become popular amongst educators. This results a renewed interest in the student engagement and motivation in learning. Based on the Shulman’s taxonomy, the objective of this research is to analyze the parameters that influence student engagement in each stages of learning in Computer Science courses through the use of LMSs. With the parameters findings, this research will develop a new scale that measure the student engagement for each stage of learning. Lastly, this research will evaluate the ability of the developed scale in measuring the student engagement. The respondents for this research are the students who enrolled Computer Science courses regardless of any year. This research chosen Computer Science students because they have been familiarized in using the existing LMSs. This research is conducted to determine whether the educational technologies are really helping student to be engaged in a classroom or they are just a tool in shaping the instructional delivery with no significant of student engagement. From the findings, this research could suggest an innovative instructional delivery to enhance the student engagement in each stages of learning. Finally, in line with National Key Research Area(NKRA) and National ICT agenda, it is anticipated that this study could provide a positive impact to assuring the quality of campus-based education where educators and students can develop a sustainable and successful blended learning environment in higher institutions.
