Abstract

Indoor air quality (IAQ) and its bad effects to health, comfort and production of the occupants is a topic that has increasing interest in the past years. In some developing countries such as Malaysia, the knowledge on the IAQ is low. In Malaysia, the climate is hot and humid throughout the year thus making the use of air-conditioning (AC) system is almost compulsory to every building in order to keep the occupants comfortable. The air conditioning system used in the Main Library in UTeM has been used for several years thus, making the assessment of IAQ is needed to identify the level of IAC in the building. This research propose to analyze the condition of the air-conditioning system used in the Main Library of Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) from the IAQ and Indoor Air Contaminants (IAC) perspective. The research checklist and the standard will be taken from the Industrial Code of Practice (ICOP) which is known to have provided the suitable recommendation for the concentration of IAC in buildings with AC system in Malaysia. The findings in this study indicate that the air conditioning system have provide air with the IAC parameter below the maximum limit while not achieving thermal comfort condition. The data exceed or below the comfort range recommended by ICOP and ASHRAE. This showed that the air conditioning system used in the building did not accomplish its design purpose which is to provide thermal comfort to the occupants in the building which lead to feeling of discomfort sensation. Finally, from all of the correlations result, we could conclude that the air-conditioning and ventilation system is highly related with the IAQ and IAC parameters. The ventilation system is crucial in providing a safe and comfort air to the occupied space.
