Abstract

Nowadays, solar energy generation is getting increasingly important as an alternative to conventional energy generation from fossil fuel. Malaysia is one of the countries that are committed to reduce the carbon emissions brought by fossil fuel and has envisioned Green Technology to help conserve the environment for future generation. A solar cell is a solid-state electrical device that converts the energy of lights directly into electricity (DC) using the Photovoltaics effect. It is also known as photovoltaic cell (PV cell). The process of conversion first requires a material which absorbs the solar energy – silicon. Silicon comes in two varieties, crystalline and thin-film cells. This research basically will study on the different types of PV cells and its efficiency on different location with different climate. The main location is Malaysia with tropical climate. First of all, the basic theory related to the PV cell has been studied. The data for kWh produced by different types of solar panel has been taken at Ayer Keroh, Melaka. Then, the energy yield by the PV cells has been analyzed by using graphical method. Additional information has been searched to compare which type of PV cell is suitable for particular climate. This includes searching over the internet, from books and journal. One of the efforts taken by the government of Malaysia in order to spark awareness of the citizen about solar technology is by giving FiT rate incentives. This offer is a golden opportunity as an alternative to withstand weakens in the Malaysia’s economy today. But the news seems does not spread widely among Malaysians. This research also aims to be an eye-opener to the public regarding the issue.
