Abstract

An off-grid photovoltaic (PV) system which is also known as stand-alone is a type of system that converts sun energy to electrical energy without any access to the conventional utility grid. Hence, by this fact, it can be stated that this PV system possessed independence in shared electricity and are normally applied in remote locations. Past researchers have focused on implementing renewable energy resources as a mean to reduce the use of diminishing fossil fuel resources and other studies has shown an interest in providing a better community infrastructure of development towards the rural society. This project aims to investigate the methods used in designation of a 1KW PV system rural electrification as well as analyzing the financial and political factors. Further research on this project was achieved through site surveys, distribution of questionnaires and the conduction of interviews. System sizing of the four main components comprises of the PV modules, charge controller, battery storage, and inverter was employed in determining the most appropriate components. To illustrate the calculation of system sizing, the load appliances needed is taken into account and the estimation of hours used in one day is proved through the average daily consumption data collection. The average annual solar irradiance level and the peak sun hour are also taken into consideration in choosing the most suitable PV module to reach the most highest efficiency performance in gathering solar energy. This project is simulated using HOMER software to analyze the economic factors of the design. The result obtained shows the 3D visualization of the design that has been created and the most appropriate material component are chosen based from this method. Photovoltaic system offers a potentially cost effective means to reduce the usage of non-renewable resources and polluted hazards of the environment as well as the fact that PV system aids in the act of humanity.
