Abstract

This study was conducted in 2005-2006 to investigate the perception of the international graduate students towards the graduate education offered at the public institutions of higher learning in Malaysia. The objectives of this study are to determine the factors that influence the choice of institution, the problems encountered and also to create a profile of international graduate students studying in Malaysia. The 344 respondents participating in this study are drawn from 6 public institutions of higher learning in Malaysia, namely, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, International Islamic University, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Utara Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Data is collected with the help from the Graduate Schools of the respective universities and analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation method. The results from of this study reveals that Malaysia is chosen primarily because the combination of its political stability, having Islam as its official religion and reasonable cost of education and living in addition to the strong emotional support that the students received from family, friends and the university. The students expressed their dissatisfaction on the facility provided by the universities. In conclusion, the study shows that Malaysia is on its way to becoming a strong education hub in the Asian region serving primarily Indonesia and the Middle East countries as an alternative to the traditional education destinations. It is recommended that the study be expanded to cover the different categories of higher education in Malaysia.
