Abstract

Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) vrswn rs to be one of the world's leading innovative and creative technical universities. In order to achieve this, UTeM implemented the concept of Outcome Based Education (OBE) to the students. OBE is a popular education reform model that focuses on empirically measuring student's perfotmance which ca lled outcomes. To measure the student's performance, one aspect to be considered is the student's achievement in foundation subjects. Therefore, this research study about the effect of foundation subject, which is Differential Equations to the advanced subjects (Control I and Control II) and students Cumulative Grade Point Average (COP A). The purpose of this research also to indicate factors that effect student's perfonnance and the effectiveness of teaching style that implemented to teach these subjects. To achieve these objectives, two approaches have been applied, which are by analyzing student's marks, CGPA and running out a survey. The analysis techniques consist of t-test, ANOV A, correlation and regression analysis. The t-test and ANOVA analysis are to determine the significant differences in student's achievement within gender, races and student's entry. Correlation analysis is a technique used to see the strength of the relationship between foundation subject and engineering subjects whereas regression analysis is a technique used to model these relationships. For the survey design, the factorial analysis was run to group the factors that have impact on student's achievement. As a conclusion, this research found out that the foundation subject does influence student's achievement in advanced subjects and CGPA. There exist significant difference in student 's performance within gender, races and entry. Factorial analysis reveals that there are nine main factors that affect student achievement. The result of this study is very important for the university in achieving the OBE concept. Several steps should be taken to increase the effectiveness of lecturer teaching style and the content of mathematics subjects.
