Abstract

Biometric technology is now becoming a widespread utility in many applications. One of the many biometrics study is face recognition which has been in existence over the past 30 years but only emerged in a rapid phase starting from early 1990s attributing to the discovery of feature extraction capability of PCA which also known as eigenface algorithm. In many ways, this discovery had spurred research interest in this field resulting in rapid development of many face recognition algorithms. In order to study in dept into this field, it is an interest for this short-term project to develop a face detection and recognition system that is backed by eigenface algorithm using programming tools in MATLAB. The complete system was tested using ORL database in a number of experiments and was found to adhere to core principles of the algorithm and produced high recognition rate. The working principles of this well known algorithm lies in the extraction of primary face features that best describe the original faces without considering other intuitive notions of facial parts (e.g. position of eyes, nose, mouth, forehead etc). The execution of this algorithm was found to be relatively straightforward and fast, and works well under controlled environment.
