Abstract
This study is to identify the level of work stress and job satisfaction among the industrial and technical lecturers of the Malaysia college universities. This study involved two hundred respondents (N=200) , comprised of lecturers from six college universities namely Kolej Universiti Teknikal Kebangsaan Malaysia (KUTKM), Kolej Universiti Islam Malaysia (KUIM), Kolej Universiti Tun Hussein Onn (KUITTHO), Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan Utara Malaysia (KUKUM), Kolej Universiti Sains dan Teknologi Malaysia (KUSTEM) and Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan dan Teknologi (KUKTEM). Statistical descriptive method and inference analysis were used with Statistical Package of The Social Science (SPSS version 11 .5). Job Related Tension Index (JRTI) by Kahn and others ( 1964) with alpha Cronbach 0.85 were used as an instrument to measure the level of work stress. Job satisfaction was measured with an instrument forwarded by Brayfield and Rathe {1951) with alpha Cronbach 0.90. The outcome of this study showed that male staff {M=2.49; SD: 0.48) had a higher level of work stress compared to the female staff (M=2.36; SD: 0.44). The analysis also showed that male staff (M=3.08; SD: 0.25) had a higher job satisfaction compared to the female staff {M= 3.06; SD: 0.24). According to the distribution of subjects showed, 95 (47.5%) subjects had a low work stress, 102 (51.0%) subjects were having a high level of work stress and 3 (1.5%) subjects were having a higher level of work stress. The distribution of job satisfaction showed that 198 (99.0%) subjects had a medium level of job satisfaction while 2 (2 .1 %) had a high job satisfaction. The overall study showed that the level of work stress (M= 28.95· SD: 4.10) and the level of job satisfaction (M=28.95; SD: 4.10) was moderate. From this study it shows that college universities should study the factors that caused the occurrences of work stress and job unsatisfaction among the lecturers so that appropriate actions could be taken in order to sustain their interest to produce quality outputs.
