The purpose of this research to develop an educational courseware that teaches essential reading skills in Bahasa Melayu based on basic fundamentals of applied phonetics. Phonetics is a discipline oflinguistics which centralizes on the study of the sounds produced and used in human speech. The target users are pre-school aged children in early stage of recognizing symbolic letters and their corresponding sounds. Printed media sold nationwide that apply phonetic approach were initially observed followed by borrowing the basic ideas from the observed materials and classify lists of content equivalence for the courseware content. The developed interactive educational courseware is hoped to ensure a decent contribution can be accomplished in assisting children to reading acquisition in a moderate period of time.
