Abstract

Intellectual property is the most powerful commercial asset that should be utilised. Intellectual property is used to cover several types of rights including patent, copyright, trademark, design, confidence and layout design of integrated circuit. Patent is granted for inventions and is a monopoly right for inventor over the products or processes. Copyright is an exclusive right for works such as literary, dramatic, artistic and musical works. Trademark is given for words or symbols used in connection to goods or services to distinguish one goods or services from another. Commercialisation of intellectual property involves taking an idea whether a product, service, process or organisational system to the market place. Commercialisation of intellectual property is very important because it generates incomes and sources of revenue. In Malaysia, the commercialisation activities are still not fully developed or rather non-satisfactory. Therefore, the research organisation such as university needs better management and promotion of their intellectual property creation in the university. It is to be emphasized that lots of intellectual property rights have been created in the university. Thus, the university should be encouraged to commercialise their intellectual creations and to generate income through commercialisation rather than being traditional centre for teaching and learning organization per se. Therefore, this study was conducted among four MTUN (Malaysian Technical University Network) using semi-structured interviews to examine the trend and development of commercialisation activities in the organizations. The study is also aimed to suggest appropriate mechanisms for commercialisation process to be effectively implemented in the organisations. The finding of this study showed that level of awareness and commercialization activities of intellectual property rights are less developed.
