Abstract

This research explores the relationship between the tendency towards practicing Entrepreneurial Management (EM) approach and the likeliness of creating a business enterprise amongst students of public higher learning institutions (IPTAs). A common opinion and assumption shared among many scholars on this subject is that there is a positive relationship between entrepreneurial behaviours and business startup. In this study entrepreneurial behaviours and inclination towards entrepreneurial approach in operating a business entity is measured using the EM survey instrument. This research is conducted at two technical oriented IPT As, i.e. Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Specifically this study is geared to answer the following research questions: "Does inclination towards EM contribute to higher potential of business venturing? This study investigates factors that were commonly thought to post as boosters as well as hindrances to the interest of venturing into business and entrepreneurial activities amongst university students upon completing their studies. Factors such as feeling comfortable with salaried job in the government and public sector, lack of interest in establishing own business and do not know of how to get access to capital are among the various factors that were identified as common barriers to starting-up own businesses. Some patterns of relationship between the related demographic variables and the propensity to EM and business start-up potentials were also explored in this research with the intention to uncover some general picture of the highly educated younger generation of the country.
