Abstract
This study seeks to describe self-access centers in selected Malaysian higher institutions. It aims to explore the present status of these self-access centers in several aspects such as the physical set up,. the materials, the activities as well as the problems faced by the selected self-access centers. Several newly established and well established self-access centers were selected from the study. The self-access centers were from the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka and International Islamic University Malaysia. In order to extract data, field observation, site visit, document analysis and interviews were carried out. Findings of the study show that each self-access centers has its own strengths and weaknesses in aspects of physical set up, materials and selfaccess management system. The findings also reveal several interesting problems shared by all self-access centers. The study ends with suggestions for further research.
