Abstract

This study investigates on the effectiveness of the teaching and learning of the Foundation English, a new course offered by the Language Department. Centre for Languages and Human Development beginning semester I 2007 I 2008 academic year. It comes with a two credit hours with one hour lecture and two hours tutorial. The research explores whether the syllabus offered, the textbook used and the instructors' methods of teaching is effective enough in preparing UTeM students to prepare for the MUET examination. This study also aims to find out whether the course is able to increase the students' proficiency in the English language as it is compulsory for the students who did not achieve a band three of the MUET examination in order for them to graduate. Findings of the study show that there are several improvements that need to be made to the current syllabus in aspects of the four skills evaluated in the MUET exam. More tips and quick guides on ways to answer the MUET exam effectively on all the four skills need to be added. In addition, the findings revealed that due to the non-existence of a standardize text for the course. this has hampered students enthusiasm in mastering skills for MUET. Hence, a proper text needs to be recommended. Lastly, the results of the study showed that students perceived the course teachers having sufficient knowledge and competency to deliver the lesson. On the other hand, the course teachers interviewed stated that generally, students' language competency is lacking. Hence, this has hindered students' effective learning of the Foundation English course.
